I have seen pictures of mine tracks that use a small turntable to change routes.
The turntable track would be 5 or 6 feet long and nothing heavier than a speeder would be on it when it was turned. Locking pins would be needed when the trains pass over it. Skid plates welded to the rail ends would keep everything in gauge and supported. Of course this would only be needed if they install the loops.

On reflection your ladder track lifted onto and across the most used tracks would be cheaper and is the better choice.---jim---
