The station designations correlate approximately to the original mileposts: Alamosa 247, Chama 339, Durango 449, etc. So N386 is almost certainly Gato / Pagosa Jct. 406 would be Allison, 365 Lumberton.

As to the helper swap, I will speculate that 452 met train 451 at Pagosa Jct. and the two trains swapped helpers there. That would allow the helper crews to return to their home terminals.
