Hi, Robert -
The artist is Jeff Ellingson, curator of the D&SNG museum and also responsible for the
painting and lettering of the D&SNG's 12"/foot collection - including #473 and those four
beautiful green coaches.
* As noted elsewhere, Jeff volunteered to paint #489's jacket for
the May 25 'Springtime in the Rockies' excursion on the C&TS, and also advised us and
supplied some of the tools used for the #487 to #483 "conversion" in August.
Previous to his 'Red Mountain' painting, last winter I commissioned a work from Jeff based on my lifetime favorite photo - #498 at milepost 286.72 on August 29, 1968 - the last afternoon of her operating life (see [
ngdiscussion.net]).

* Also noted previously, the green urethane used on the D&SNG coaches and C&TS #489 is based on a sample of authentic D&RGW Dark Olive Green Boiler Jacket Enamel that Jeff had analyzed and duplicated. This ultra-high-quality urethane doesn't fade as rapidly as the original enamel, and maintains its gloss a bit better, so it appears very slightly more bluish than the D&RGW green in some the old photos of #489 in 1950 and D&RGW's standard gauge engines to which the green enamel was applied.
