I must respectfully disagree here -
In the glory days of steam railroading, the major lines put a LOT of effort into keeping
their passenger power, at least, as clean as possible. IIRC several of D&RGW's 4-8-4's
had Dark Olive Green jackets, and were kept clean enough - in spite of all the tunnels -
that the Green was visible!
IMHO, clean locomotives are a reflection of a railroad's pride, and were it not for the present difficulties keeping the crews even busier than usual I'm sure the C&TS would be using #489 to better advertise the company name and the upcoming 40th Anniversary Celebration.
If I didn't live 1,000 miles away, I'd be washing her twice a week myself!
