I went as a kid to the islands .Here are some memories :
1.The Oahu Railways' weed-grown two-track mainline still ran over the the West Loch of Pearl Harbor ,near the airport .#15 and 19 ,m.u.'d , held up traffic as it switched pinapple from the harbor to the Dole cannery . Further down the highway we passed the Oahu Ry. roundhouse ,where #60 , the last of four handsome 2-8-2s the railroad owned , that were almost identical to K-28s (it was scrapped in 1966) .
2 .We flew to the Big Island .Beautiful ,though a solemn island . We were the only ones on Black Sand Beach ,which was later destroyed by lava flows . A brief stop in Maui revealed the railroad tracks of the Kahului Railway .
3 .Kauai-a then-unspoiled jewel .Japanese Mom-and-Pop general stores that were already an anachronism on the mainland , few tourists and solitude everywhere. I remember that Grove Farm had just pulled up its field trackage ,as frequent rail crossings were still in the new asphalt of the roads on the southeast side of that lovely island .I almost fear going again as it has been since overrun .
