July 10, 1960: Tucumcari — Five transient riders were killed and three crewmen injured Saturday when a Rock Island Railroad freight train plunged off a rain-weakened trestle and burned 17 miles east of Tucumcari. The freight was westbound from Amarillo, Texas, when the wooden trestle crumpled under it, sending 17 of the 41 cars into the arroyo. The engine made it across before the derailing. Recent heavy rains in the area hampered rescue operations. The only way to get equipment to the scene was by rail. There are no roads to the crash site.
