In my opinion, while they are much more costly and labor intensive to maintain, nothing beats a machine that operates on water and wood, for which parts can be made from rail, boiler tubes and whatever nut, boltm, nail or screw is at hand, with no million-dollar electronics or refined petroleum products involved. Several of those involved in the restoration of D&RGW 223 have said as much while working on the Utah State Railroad Museum's 44-tonner (which is now operational!)
