The blast could have been a "Sparkler Bomb" that some genius put out on the trestle to detonate it in a safe place. Depending on how built, these are quite capable of making a loud boom and may not leave any obvious evidence, but would certainly be capable of igniting the bridge deck. Given that other fireworks were being used nearby this is entirely possible.
