Re: Snow ploughs on K27s

Just a heads up on K-27 plows: Pilot mounted snow plows did not come into common usage on the D&RGW until about 1940, except for several K-28's. These engines, on daily passenger trains, kept the lines open. Plows were not fitted to K-27's until that time and 453, which received its flying Rio Grande fairly late, is the only one I have seen with a plow and the old Royal Gorge herald. Other engines which received plows during the 40's and early 50's were 462, 463 and 464. I have yet to see 454 with a plow. Both of the RGS K-27s had plows, but again not until the 1947 rebuild for 455 and 1951 for the 461. I believe 461 is the only K-27 with inward sloping piston valves that ever received one.

Since the deck mounted toolbox wouldn't fit under the plow it can be generally assumed that if the box was on the deck, it hasn't had a plow attached. They didn't get replaced after plows were removed. This is true for K-27's and K-36's alike.
