Out in Nevada, Hawthorne was started by the Carson & Colorado and its backers.
Very soon after the arrival of the railroad the Esmeralda County government relocated from Aurora, Nevada, to the new town. Also many business and even houses were relocated. The location was a crew change location (and later division point) for the C&C. And it became a transshipping point to the nearby mining camps.
The C&C was described as a line "that started nowhere, ended nowhere and stopped all night to think it over." Hawthorne is where the trains stopped for the night and any through riders had to find their own overnight accommodations.
Hawthorne has suffered its ups and downs over the following decades. The nearby mining camps waned, the railroad left town, the county seat moved to Goldfield, the county was split and the old court house was re-occupied, the government established an ammunition depot.
