Since it sounds like you may be new to the NGDF, a disclaimer: I'm a member of the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, I'm a former employee of the Railroad, I belong to several railroad historical societies, and I prefer the ride from Chama to Osier...but the trip from Antonito is a real close second! :-)
The good of the internet is that good news can travel very fast. The bad part of the 'Net is that bad news can travel very fast, too. Unfortunately, rumors fall into the 'bad news' category. Add the inherent anonymity of the World Wide Web (well, mostly anonymous -- there are ways... *S*) and a rumor can take on more and more, um, 'substance' until people believe the rumor to be fact. As an example, witness your reference to the Nevada Northern situation.
My recommendation is to visit a number of the narrow gauge boards, then form your own opinion as to which boards suit your needs. Among the boards I visit are this one, the Railway Preservation board (www.rypn.org), and Trainorders.com.
Also, in a shameless plug for John West's photographs (Hi, John! :-) ), make sure you see [
www.narrowgaugememories.com]. There are photos of the Cumbres and Toltec before it was the Cumbres and Toltec, and in my opinion, *that's* the railroading atmosphere the supporters of the C&TS, the D&S, the East Broad Top, and other historic railroads are looking to preserve.
Interesting thread you started. Keep asking the good questions.
