The Arkansas Valley Railroad in Colorado, stretching from Kit Carson, CO, on the Santa Fe, to Las Animas, CO, on the Kansas Pacific, for a distance of 76.5 miles, opened in 1873 and was abandoned in 1877. This was Colorado's first major rail abandonment. Pushed by Pueblo, CO, interests, the line was supposed to funnel Kansas Pacific traffic to and from Pueblo via the Santa Fe. Cooperation between the two major railroads was never forthcoming, and the line quickly starved to death. Probably a rail line that never should have been built in the first place.
