This started as a plea for paint money, (yes, it was a dream 30 years ago) then it developed into a full fledged successful charter. Who would have thought Stephan would be feeding a bunch of questionable characters mexican food after 6:00PM at Osier. Everything clicked, special run-bys, a meet at an unusual location, best of all the cooperation of the Railroad, Alan Loomis, Crew, reservation ladies, etc.
What was great, was the Railroad's ability to have the third locomotive ready to pull this charter. Despite a bunch of nay-sayers saying a
third locomotive would not be ready, too early in the season, Russ was a hare brained foamer, the Railroad could not get it's act together due to incompetent management, etc. Due to Russ's efforts with the C&TS people it ran and ran well. It shows that everyone on the Railroad, from the management on down is capable of working together. That should have silenced the doom and gloom faction. (Now all they are complaining about is an inexperienced docent in training)
At the risk of giving him the big head, Russ did a wonderful job pulling everything together, it all starts with a dream and the willingness to put out a lot of effort. A lesser person might have given up long ago.
We have a gem that is the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad running between New Mexico and Colorado. It takes people like Russ to bust their butts to keep it going.
Russo-All these platitudes should be worth a bottle of Arrogant Bastard Ale?
Keep the faith.
