At work (a water purveyor) I have seen plans for a new underpass in the Los Angeles area (actually on the Santa Fe Springs-La Mirada border) under the BNSF. This bridge will be built with "sacrificial beams" on both sides of the actual bridge.

That way if an oversize truck load gets to the bridge it will hit these non-structural beams and hopefully avoid damage to the major transportation link.
