Jeff Ellingson, who helped a great deal today in not just ordering the paint for us but also in applying it, has had a LOT of practice. Not only is Jeff in charge of the D&SNG's superb museum in Durango, he is responsible for
all of the painting and lettering (the latter done mostly by hand) for ALL of the D&SNG'S locomotives and rolling stock. I got a good look at one of the green coaches last weekend, and it is BEAUTIFUL! (How could it not be beautiful - Jeff used
exactly the same paint on it as he applied to #489!)
Here is the master at work, painting one of my favorite locomotives:
He is also pretty good

p.s. My snapshot of Jeff's latest masterpiece, which depicts #498 on her very last day of operation, does not begin to do it justice. The photo was taken outdoors on a bright day, so it appears a lot more blue than when viewed under normal indoor light. The detail in this watercolor - which is based on my favorite among my own photos, 'The Last Freight' - is incredible. The 20"x32" original was on display in the D&S museum during Railfest 2010;
we are hoping to make a VERY limited number of ultra-high-quality gicleé-on-canvas prints available as part of a fundraising effort for the rebuilding of a C&TS K-37 . . .
