IIRC, the C&TS photo freights on August 28 & 29 will feature an operational 'stunt double' standing in for #483, dressed in the movie make-up from 1968's "
The Good Guys and the Bad Guys" that she was still wearing in September, 1970, when she pulled - and pushed - the first C&TS train from Antonito to Chama, but with her tender lettered '
CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD' and wearing the '
Toltec Gorge Route' herald that Ernie Robart had applied within a few hours of #483 being turned over to the two states by the D&RGW. (See [
ngdiscussion.net].)
But if #484, #487 or #488 becomes #483's 'stunt double', then green-jacketed #489 should still be available to be the helper on Saturday's eastbound photo freight from Chama to Cumbres ...
Because the last weekend of August, 2010, will be a Celebration of the 40th Birthday of the C&TS -
not the D&RGW - and partly for marketing purposes (to help develop the C&TS "Brand")
#489 should be wearing 'CUMBRES & TOLTEC SCENIC RR' lettering (using a slightly larger font than for #483's fully spelled out name), and a tri-color or even full-color '40 Years' logo. (IMHO
all of the locomotives except "#483" should be so lettered. Of course these should be magnetic overlays that can be removed easily when the flying
Rio Grande lettering is needed for historic charters.)
Instead of re-enacting history, the C&TS could be making history - for an hour or two, anyway, on 08/28/10 - with it's most colorful lash-up of locomotives since #19 was last used (as a helper?) in the mid-seventies. Picture green-jacketed #489 in the lead at "Lake Lobato", the crossings at Dalton and Coxo, and the S-curve at M.P. 337 with her tender looking like this:
... followed by red-domed and red-cabbed #483, with gold trim and bright red counterweights, and her tender looking like this:
This is as close to "Circus Colors" as the C&TS should ever get - and just once - as part of the 40th Anniversary Celebration!
IMHO this
really ought to be done! Who knows - it might even make the 11:00 news!!
