It was an interesting day to start the Silverton season to say the least! In addition to the mechanical problems and set-off of Gondola 409, we encountered a large boulder in our route to Silverton. Take a closer look towards the pilot and lack of a step on the Fireman's side of the 480. The twisted metal is where it struck the rock and took the step clear off. Additionally, we encountered an attempt to put our train on the ground on the way home. As we arrived at Pinkerton and came around the curve, the train was big-holed as some individuals had placed numerous rocks and an angle bar on the tracks. The angle bar was placed in a manner that when the train hit it, it would be forced into the track bolts at a rail joint. Thus lifting the locomotive off the track and derailing it. We were luckily able to stop in time and after taking pictures for evidence, cleared the track and continued homeward bound. It's angering that individuals would attempt such things...
