In 1903, the U.S. Zinc Co. built a smelter just east of Pueblo to process zinc blende ore. The new town of Blende took its name from the ore.

The D&RG did serve the smelter, but my information says the smelter was closed following the 1921 flood and never reopened. Perhaps they carried on in a limited capacity for a few more years?

I would think any ore heading to the steel mill would say Minnequa, not Blende. They're close together, but not close enough for railroad work.
