Legend (unreferenceable rumor) has it that the C&S donated locomotive #60 and coach #70 to Silver Plume, Colorado. The townspeople of Idaho Springs were jealous and plotted to get this display for their own.
When the train arrived to Idaho Springs, it was met with fanfare and the C&S crew was obliged to have a celebritory drink before heading up the hill. As the alcohol took its toll, the fire was dropped and #60 stayed in Idaho Springs (only to have idiots burn tires in the locomotive in later years to produce smoke).
This being a story I know only thru the Clear Creek locals may be the same situation that GLR had to avoid with SVR. Even tho Sumpter Valley gives railfans unparallelled royal treatment (well worth the visit), those Sumpter guys may have tried a similar trick and had #40 off the truck and relettered before the next sunrise if they had only known.
