I find the removal of builder's plates interesting because (now I'm going to tell a Colorado broad gauge story) the Santa Fe started to remove builders plates at the onset of WWII and the ICC inspectors had a fit and made them put them back on. Some of the plates didn't get melted and were put back on engines, only they didn't go back on the original engines. The engines whose plates did get melted got a new plate (larger than the original) with a "ATxxxx" number. For a long time, I had the fake plates off of engine 1028, but traded them for something else about 10 years ago. My Dad was S.R. Wood's Topeka contact and this little puzzle gave them fits as they tried to get info correct for R&LHS bulletin #95.
