Somewhere I have slides taken in the summer of 1956 on what I have been told was the last time a K27 went to Silverton. The story I have been told is the regular 470 had an air pump failure on the depot platform in Durango. The only other engine in town that was hot was 464, which at that time was the Durango Switcher. 464 charged forth with the train and had one hell of a time. As the yard engine, it probably hadn't been out and the main and run hard for a long time. The smokebox and flues were probably plugged with cinders. 464 had to stop several times to blow up steam. One shot I remember is at Rockwood with a nice pretty string of Grande Gold coaches being pulled by an absolutely filthy 464 that was so dirty it's lettering was almost unreadable. It's sitting on the main, blower wide open, huge cloud of black smoke going skyward. Passengers standing around, crew looking REAL pissed off, wondering if they will ever make Silverton.
I've been on the 463 few days that turned out like that. It's a rather hopeless feeling.
As to the last C-class into Silverton. My guess is 268 when they filmed "Denver & Rio Grande" in 1951. In regular service, 375 was the regular Silverton Branch engine until they scrapped it in 1949. I don't think the 315 being shoved by the diesel for "Around the World in 80 Days" counts.
