We've beat this one to death. The pic is of the regular 215 with the extra cars cut in for the tour. There is the regular summer time 5 car consist plus an extra baggage car, 2 extra coaches and the Silver Vista.

All this is quite within the capabilities of a K28 westbound to Durango where the ruling grade is only 1.42%. The wood passenger cars only weigh 20-25 tons each, making for a 225 ton train. A K36 could drag this up the hill by itself, but it would be slow. I wonder if the K28 was kept on as a helper.

Either 470's or 480's were used on the San Juan, depending on what was available.

A fully loaded steel C&TS coach tips the scales at 27-30 tons.
