Maybe John Norwood is to blame....

I seem to remember in one of Norwood's books about his Rio Grande career he described taking the Colorado highway engineers in during the winter via snowcat (this was after the railroad closed down for the winter) to show them how to route the new highway to avoid the deepest drifts. Since Windy Point gets a lot of sun, it was probably the logical route to minimize winter snow problems. The old gravel road went up the shady side of the draw.
