The next FEBT Rockhill work session of 2010 will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14, 2010

We will work from 9 am to 4 pm Saturday and from 9 am to 4 pm Sunday. We'll meet at the Rockhill shops at 9 am.

MEALS
Breakfast and lunch both days and dinner on Saturday will be available at the Iron Rail B&B, across the street from the depot. No meals will be offered by RTY this session. Please RSVP directly to the Brightbills at the Iron Rail (trolley@innernet.net) if you plan to eat any of these meals. Dinner is subject to cancellation if there are not enough RSVPs.

WEATHER
Wow! It looks like we’ll be in the 50s this weekend! Visit www.accuweather.com and check the Rockhill zip code, 17249, for the latest on the approach of spring.

COMBINE 14
Our new work procedures (takes one side of the car to really learn how to do it!) are making fast work of the east side. We will be fabricating new side sill material, working on the in-letting for the splice, and finishing parts for the north bolster reconstruction on the west side. Work will also probably start on the north platform. General carpenter tools and small power tools are handy for this work. Lee Rainey will lead this project.

BOILER HOUSE
The work include more construction on the “Rat’s Nest” – the work platform above the boilers, in line with the window sills, to allow most of the roof replacement work to be done from the inside. Then the crew will begin looking at replacing a major timber that supports the main lineshaft in front of the wheel lathe. New timbers are on-hand; but this will be a complicated job, as the rotten timbers are above the lineshaft bearings and two other timbers are between them.. Heavy-duty hand power tools are useful on this crew. Remember their motto: anything smaller than a 4x4 is just trim. Jim Bacon is the crew leader in the machine shops

MAIN SHOPS
The Glass Rattlers have a number of projects, including: remove scabbing from the Boiler House post, re-install the radiator in the Boiler House, measure for Boiler House siding, mark and remove the radiators in the Locomotive Shop, remove internal siding from the Locomotive Shop, clean out sill remains, cut and drill scabs for Loco Shop posts, move new Loco Shop sill inside, and continue the slip roll restoration. Bill Adams and Chris Coleman will lead this project.

STEEL CREW
These folks are spending the winter on a variety of projects related to the coal tipple, the Combine 14 trucks, the Combine 16 trucks, and the Combine 14 end platforms. Steve Jacobs leads this crew.

GROUND RULES
To take part you must be 18 and a member of the FEBT (or join the FEBT at the work site.) These are insurance requirements. We are guests of the railroad and need to behave accordingly.

Last-minute walk-ons are always welcome at our sessions, but if possible, drop me an email in advance to let me know that you are coming. It helps with the planning.

See you there!
