There are actually two bulbs in two sockets. The housing is, let's say, 24" from front to back. The front half of that is taken up by the reflector. The rear half is open space.
One socket faces forward, so a bulb can be installed through the hole in the reflector. The other socket just lights up the open area behind the reflector.
