Headlight Reflector...how are the side number boards lit?

March 05, 2010 02:30PM avatar
I have a question that I thought for sure would be in the archives. I searched over 29 pages but didn't find anything on point. Maybe I'm an idiot and missed it, but if not, here is my question.

I'm in the process of installing a headlight onto my G scale model K-27 locomotive. The headlight is a very nice piece with open number boards for lighting.

This is what it looks like:

I'm trying to find a mini flashlight reflector to use, so hopefully I'll find one small enough (approximately 15 mm diameter).

Anyway, I'm wondering how were the side number boards lit with a reflector? Were there slits in the reflector sides to allow light to pass through? Or was the reflector placed behind the number boards?

I'm not too knowledgeable with locomotive headlights so please feel free to explain in detail how they operate and post any photos of a headlight you'd like.

Thanks.
