Not just mules and horses. Before the RR was removed people drove cars and trucks up there. Bob Richardson, Otto Perry, and the others drove up there. You could not drive from the west side. When these guys took all the photos of the 4 engine stock trains, they would shoot them at Sargents, drive like mad over Monarch Pass to Mear's Junction and then drive up this mule/horse track to the top and catch the trains coming east.
I think this road is why Bob Richardson's vehicles got the name "gut busters."
