Mineral Hot Springs seems like an unusual spot to add the helper. It appears that this was planned before hand rather than a case of something happening enroute.

No, no horse collision, just a little trouble getting them off the track.

Yes, helper was planned. The grade continued to increase from Mineral Hot Springs and the extra east had enough tonnage to need help and especially for doubling Round Hill to Poncha Pass.
