Interesting shot of what looks like an EBT hopper getting the side sheets lowered. I would guess this is to reduce the cubic capacity of the car to minimize the risks of overloading (they were built for coal, ballast is a lot heavier per cubic foot). I think the White Pass cut some holes in the sides for the same purpose, but that probably had the disadvantage of weakening the structure. The mod being done at Antonito appears to be designed to maintain the full structural integrity of the sides. I wonder if anyone who reads and posts here knows more about what is going on.
