The old freight house is now the B&PO Elk lodge. It is located across the street south of the El Capitan Casino. Exterior walls have been added at the edges of the roof/freight dock -- so I don't know what the interior is like. But the roof appears to be original design.
Hawthorne, founded by the railroad, became the division point for the C&C. The county seat was soon moved from the declining mining camp of Aurora to the new commercial center of Hawthorne.
During the 1920s prior to the development of the Ammunition Depot the population was several hundred smaller than Mina (the SP's division point). In 1920 Hawthorne had 244 and Mina had 611. In 1930 Hawthorne had risen to 757 because of the Ammunition facility and Mina had dropped to 395. In 2000 the figures were 3928 and 284 respectively.
