I believe the 496 was set aside in 1954 and scrapped the following year--I know she had some major boiler damage. You can't see it due to the shadows in that pic but the 496 sported dual gauge coupler pockets on the tender and the locomotive pilot. This tender ended up behind the 491 in later years. Hope this answers some of your questions.
