Ten year anniversary

Ten years ago the RGRPC was assuming responsibility for the operation of the C&TS. It has been an "interesting" ten years. Three management groups later, at least we can say the railroad is still running, and except for the drop in patronage in many respects in better shape than it was ten years ago. But obviously it was a rough road. A lot of hard lessons were learned or should have been learned in getting from there to here. And a lot of good people were chewed up and spit out.

Perhaps the most positive thing is lobbying efforts were successful to get the State of New Mexico to accept greater financial responsibility for keeping the railroad alive. That together with successful applications for Federal grants, limited financial aid from Colorado, and private fund raising provided a financial foundation. That money and a core of talented and hard working employees produced a measure of success. And perhaps a foundation on which a more secure future can be built.

The most troubling issue is ten years later the management structure of the railroad remains unsettled.

Food for thought.
