Earl wrote, "I'd buy into the idea of getting coal and water leaving town headed east except for coal and water were 'hostler functions' in a terminal, so we're crossing craft bounderies here."
Since I hired out after steam I never got into this personally, but on many "mainline" railroads there were water and fuel facilities set up along station platforms so that engines could take water and fuel while stopped at the station and attached to the train. San Luis Obispo is a good example of this in a terminal, but usually road passenger power was not changed, although helpers were regularly added and taken off. I wonder who handled the watering of the road engine standing in the station. I suppose it would be no big deal for the hostler or hostler helper to walk over from the roundhouse and do it while the road crews looked on. Presumably could have been the same at Chama after the train pulled down from the station.
Thinking about Earl's comment about the coal dust, one of the unanswered questions is how much coal would typically be consumed by such a light train before arriving in Chama (in either direction). Did they really need to top off at Chama? I would think so, especially eastbound, but with such a light train....I duuno.
Earl, you were going to check with some folks who fired the San Juan. That may be the only way to really answer these questions. And just because the questions are trivial doesn't mean the answers are not vital to our mental well being.
