Russ:
Coldest I have ever felt in my life was at the C&TS first rotary run in 1974. We were doing a night shoot and it was 45 below. I made the trip with Bob Richardson, but he was too smart to stay out there and went back to our motel. I caught a ride with some others after shooting. It was so cold my tripod froze in the open position and I had to take it inside Caboose 0503 to thaw out so I could close it.
Reminded me of stories I heard from Frank Wright and other D&RGW crewmen. Frank said it was so cold in Gunnison that coal trains coming down from Crested Butte were not allowed to stand still longer than 15 minutes as the journals would freeze up and the train could not move. He said if that happened, they would uncouple 4 or 5 cars and drag them until the journals heated up. He said problem with that is by the time you got the last string heated up, the first ones might have refrozen. The crew taking the train on to Sargents had to be ready to go as soon as the Crested Butte crew brought the train into the yard.
