SG Farmington Branch- a separate chartered railway (? is removed)

Jan 28, 1905s Durango Wage Earner

There is an unconfirmed rumor, but a well founded one, it appears to the effect that the Phelps-Dodge syndicate has entered into an agreement with the D. & R.G. railroad company for a trackage arrangement, a third rail being laid from Durango on the D. & R.G. track down the valley to the point where the Phelps-Dodge road will turn off for Farmington, so the latter road will enter Durango on the Rio Grande tracks. Another rumor is that negotiations are pending for the purchase of the old Durango Iron Works foundry, which is to be used for a depot. It is believed that it is wanted by the Phelps-Dodge people. The foundry has been closed down for a long time and it is admirably situated for a depot location, considering the sites for depots are very scarce.

Railroad grade is warming up with the weather and the several camps are engaging in activity and the Rio Grande Railway to the south will soon be in full swing. It will not be but a few days until work of laying broad gauge steel in Durango yards will commence and it should not be long until the yards are expanded and laid out with a view to future use, as even now there are days when a train is held for a time upon the main track until room for it can be made by switching. There will be five crossing of the Animas River between Durango and Farmington and Supt. Ogle is getting the timbers in shape as the Rio Grande will build the bridges as rapidly as the work can be accomplished, as bridge building must be kept up promptly to facilitate moving of supplies essential to construction. The roundhouse improvements will enlist an expenditure of $25,000 and as the Rio Grande Railway will be separate, the additional men will be employed to keep a third set of accounts as we now have the Rio Grande [D. & R.G.], Rio Grande Southern, and the Rio Grande Railway to come and there is no desire upon part of either corporation to overheat James Roosevelt Brown. The grade is now on the boom and soon there will be a doubled force on the ground, in the yards and on the roundhouse.

Interesting, but likely just typical newspaper reporter screwing up with names.
