Have to concur with Jerry. The book," My Life on Mountain railroads" by William John Gilbert Gould is a great read. It's a day by day narration of a young guy who hired on the D&RG right after the turn of the last century. He did some narrow gauge, but mostly standard gauge. Recollections of firing between Price and Ogden, over Soldier Summit are really interesting. Braking stories are pretty much "nuts" on. If you've ever fired or ran a steam locomotive, or just stood on the apron watching an engineer or fireman you can appreciate this book. Gould later went to work for the Utah Railway out of Helper, running some big power. The author uses some imagination, but most of the stories seem authentic.
