I have a video showing what is supposed to be a 100 car train from Sargents to Gunnison. It appears to be around 60 cars--still a long train. It is funny that people associate narrow gauge with short trains winding trough mountains, but on the Rio Grande long trains seemed to be the norm. I have seen the 268 pulling 40+ cars from Gunnison to Sapinero-though it was all downgrade but it was still impressive as it snaked its way along the Gunnison River. It was also the norm for trains bound for Monarch to leave Salida with 56 empty gons---half were set out in Maysville and two turns of 28 cars were taken up to mine. It must have been quite a sight to see the K-36's struggling up the 4.5% grade. Even in later years on Cumbres 100 car trains were common. Let me stop ramblin.
