Dispatcher’s memorandum reads: “6:30 PM conductor Straitiff extra 497-491 and 499 reports from Keene has 6 coal cars partly turned over against side of cut between Keene and Shirley apparently caused by broken train line next to middle engine about 21 cars ahead of caboose and rear engine causing air to go into emergency and pulling out draw head first car ahead of middle engine. Apparently very little damage to equipment and track. Tool cars leave Salida about 11:00 PM soon as crews available. Engine 497 engineer Dailey and engine 491 engineer W Wilson go light to Marshall Pass after leaving head cut of train, 23 empties and 3 loads at Grays and both engine crews go on release until called. Engine 499 and rear 15 cars and Straitiff caboose taken back to Shirley. Later conductor Plewes and crew deadheading extra 497 west to Marshall Pass took their caboose and Stratiff and crew and caboose to Salida. Running tool cars soon as crews available. RG 9558 and 1887 dropped into Keene, 1887 used for hand brake.”

(Derailment happened at MP 229 ¾. 6 cars behind middle helper engine 491derailed. Appears RG 9558 may be the car with the pulled out draw head. On the way to taking the head end to Grays, RG 9558 and 1887 were left at Keene. 23 cars taken to Grays as capacity for Keene siding was 18 cars. Engine 497 and engine 491 light to Marshall Pass and crews released. Engine 499 with conductor Straitiff back to Shirley at 7:55 PM and Straitfif and crew released. Conductor Plewes and crew on duty and take engine 499 and 2 cabooses to Salida.)
