One of those Blah, blah, blah items!
You might also find them considered as "appurtenances". ICC used this term (Locomotive Inspection Act) for those "many store bought" items as other have described.
There is a difference in the meaning between both words.
But, if I were to venture a railroad guess, appurtenance may have been the earlier word that perhaps covered more locomotive items in general.
(For example: Many roads made their own cylinder cocks, staybolts, etc.)
Where appliances came along later and perhaps was meant to indentify those specific items such as injectors, generators, etc.
(I at times dislike the using this term as the word that comes to mind is refrigerator!)
But this is only a S.W.A.G. It does come back to the original user and what their intention to describe and depth of the definition as meant from a railroad point of view.
