The timing of these two specials may seem a little odd, but the reasons are as follows...
The Valentine's Special later departure on Saturday was necessary to coincide with a more appropriate arrival time back in Durango for the dinner portion of the package at the Strater Hotel.
The railroad has always tried to schedule the Winter Photographer's Special on the "middle day" (Sunday) of the three-day President's Weekend... to hopefully allow more riders to take part in this event and travel from out of the area without having to potentially miss a day of work/school... The way Valentine's Day fell this year, we felt this would be the better schedule... It would have been TOO MUCH to schedule both trains on the same day!
Both events will feature the current extreme winter landscape of the Animas Canyon (as witnessed by photos from last week's flanger trains) and should not be missed! With more unsettled weather in the forecast, it could get even more interesting... For those planning to attend the Photographer's Special, the Valentine's Train would make an excellent and unique "introductory" ride into the canyon to scope out the scene... whether your "sweetheart" is along or not! It's ALWAYS a good time when all of the Premium Class equipment is put together for a train!
Hope to see you all in Durango in two weeks - It will be worth the trip!
