Wood was frequently used as insulation on steam traction engine boilers. Just a few nails are required to installsheet metal jacket over the wood. My 20HP Minneapolis Traction engine is insulated and lagged this way. Remember, this was before the days of the pop rivet and similar fasteners. Stationery steam engines also frequently had wood lagging around the cylinders.
