The original idea was to present the approximate date of the last use of the engines and of course the 470's stayed on in service until they were sold to D&S.
But..... 478 and 476 pulled the first westbound freight out of Alamosa for 1968 on May 28, 1968. It was the last time either engine saw Chama. 478 was used on a couple of Farmington turns and I belive as a helper for a westbound from Gato to Durango a couple weeks later. 476 didn't pull another freight train on the NG.
I'll need to look up 473's last revenue freight appearance. It spent the winter of 67-68 in Durango. Rumor has it that it was supposed to go east in Dec.67 and 476 was supposed to go west at that time, but snow cancelled the run and they gave up for the winter. As 473 didn't get to the shop that winter, 473 was the spare Silverton engine that year while 476 and 478 pulled the trains. I have 127 instamatic shots of a dead 473 in the Durango house with 497 and 498 on each side of her in August, 1968. We rode behind 476 dragging 12 cars - including the B3 to Silverton on a rainy day. B3 was rented by Graham Claytor (of Southern Ry fame) who took pity on a certain 10 year old railfan - but that's a story for another time.
After staring in Butch Cassidy, 473 ran light to from Durango to Alamosa for shopping and came west on the last train on Dec.5-6, 1968.
499 came and went a few times. It disappears for as much as a year at a time. Just when you think 499's done, it comes back and runs for a few more months until it's flue time finally ran out and the ICC wouldn't give it another extension.
