Hillcrest Lumber Co. Shay No. 1

December 19, 2009 07:31PM
Probably my favorite Shay of all time, with an interesting history. Started as a 36" gauge engine, it was changed to standard gauge at the Lima plant before it was finished! It was re-converted to 36" later in it's career. Presently out of service at the B. C. Forest Discovery Centre on Vancouver Island. Any word on if and when she will be back in steam?

I have a photo, taken in about 1971, on a trip to the Island, that I turned into a pseudo builders photo. I thought it came out pretty nice!

I've been doing a number of favorite engines this way, tedious, but way easier in Photoshop than the original method of painting opaque on the 8x10 negatives!
