Steve told me when he was roadmaster that the rail we got from the Jamieson branch was a relay from the mainline in Wyoming, according to the dates and mill info on the rail. The oldest is dated 1898, out near Whitney Hwy Crossing. There may be a stick or two that is older, but the Illinios 1898 is extensively in use, now, in that area.
We got most of the rail donated from UP branches that were being closed down, so did not pick the size, but took whatever was offered.
We have many more ties than are needed for the size of rail and trains, so if one or two go bad, it is not a problem, as long as they are not all in a row. Smitty keeps track of that, and next year, I hope to be on some of the work parties out to help him replace some of the bad ones, to keep from having too many bad ones in a row.
