Andy:

Well that may be true now or on other RRs, but the D&RGW had a long-time practice of using the same power on specific assignments: 479 on the Shavano, 474 on the Crested Butte branch (later 498 on the CBbranch), 223, 268, and 278 on the Baldwin branch, 360, 361 on runs thru the Black Canyon, 456 Gunnison switcher and CB helper, 375 and 453 on the Silverton run. Obvioulsy if the regualr engine was not available, a substitution would be made. After looking at D&RGW train register books and distpacher sheets, you can see the same power used over and over again on assignments.
