Well, I am told that they are essentially the same -- except for the rear of the frame and the trailing truck. The reason is that the frames and running gear were bought from Baldwin Locomotive Works and based upon the K-36 design.

I'm told that the D&RGW had thought of buying more K-36 locomotives and had made a down payment to BLW. But then changed its mind about spending the money. But it used the down payment for buying the frames, etc. that were used with the std. gauge 2-8-0 boilers, etc.
