There seem to be very few - if any - trees along the bottom of the valley of Cumbres Creek
from the bottom of Tanglefoot curve all the way to Apache Crossing, and ditto for the upper
Los Piños Valley from Los Piños Tank all the way to Osier and beyond. Are/were there soil
and/or weather conditions in these valleys that discouraged the D&RGW from planting trees
to minimize drifts as mentioned in your post, forcing the RR to construct snow fences west
of Apache Crossing and also about 1½ miles north?
These fences lasted into the nineteen seventies, but were pretty much rotted away by the time the second photo below was taken in 2008:
