The rest of the story had Colonel Morgan, the agent of the bondholders, denied he said that to abandon the entire San Juan line. He instead said to tear up Chama to Antonito and relay it Chama to Chamita on the Chili Line, using part of the line up the Chama River where 50 miles of grading was done in the 1870s. This would make Santa Fe a valuable outlet for the San Juan country, particularly beneficial to Durango and Silverton, and ward off the AT&SF from looking at a route to or via Durango.
