This may want to read "house once owned by Otto Mears (and his land corporation)" as his local residence was in Silverton, and in later years, he lived elsewhere but not Ridgway. Otto seems to have moved around a lot, be it in charge of building the Colorado state capitol building, being president of the Mack Motor Truck Co., building the railroad out of Washington, DC to Chesapeake Bay, or spending a lot of time in southern California. I forget which grandson told us in Silverton many years back of a motor car trip he and Otto took through Montana in the 1920s and Otto's fascination with speed--they were passed by a LaSalle and the next town that had a LaSalle distributorship, Otto traded in the car for a LaSalle. But though this house has some charm, despite its shed roof addition, I doubt that it played much if any of a role in Otto's personal life as a residence. Otto's house in Silverton, of far greater significance, now sports an observatory built on the rear of the house a couple of years ago.
