IIRC, 7% between Eureka and Animas Forks. Only rod engines were used, At least one photo exists of an engine headed upgrade with two boxcars behind it -- not in front of the engine as one would expect on such a steep grade. Nevertheless, all the steel for the framework of the Gold Prince mill at Animas Forks was taken up that 7%. Likewise, when the first Sunnyside mill was to be built and the Gold Prince had been abandoned, all the steel came back down that 7% for reuse at Sunnyside.
For me, it's strictly a guess for the stretch between Eureka & Silverton but it probably was between 2% and 3% at most. I'm not sure about the Cunningham Gulch branch but it probably was about 2%.
